What is neurofeedback?
Neurofeedback is a type of brain training that uses EEG technology to receive real-time feedback about the state of your brain and correct any dysfunction that is occurring. During a neurofeedback therapy session, your psychophysiological state is captured through special sensors that are attached to your scalp.
These sensors can identify when your brain is performing optimally and when it is not. When your brain is performing well, a visual or auditory reward is given (often a song or movie plays). When it’s not functioning the way it should, the reward is taken away. This helps you learn how to better self-regulate the electrical activity in your brain.
Neurofeedback for anxiety and depression
A great deal of research over the last several decades has provided extensive evidence for how effective neurofeedback can be as a treatment modality for anxiety and depression, especially when used in conjunction with medication and talk therapy.
One of the reasons neurofeedback is so effective in helping people find lasting relief is because it treats the problem at the source. You may recall hearing that people with depression or anxiety have a chemical imbalance in the brain. Though this theory is often used as an explanation for people with mental health disorders, that theory has actually been disproven (Healthline).
Brainwaves and your mental state
What’s actually occurring in the brains of people who struggle with anxiety or depression is the production of irregular brainwaves. Irregular brainwave patterns correlate with mental health conditions, as abnormalities in brain functioning can contribute to the development of certain disorders.
For example, when there are areas of the brain that are over-stimulated, you may experience anxiety. And when there are areas that are underperforming, you may experience depression.
With a qEEG brain map, your neurofeedback specialist can identify the specific areas that are contributing to the symptoms you’re experiencing and recommend a personalized treatment plan based on their findings.
Neurofeedback, at its very core, is all about identifying irregular brainwaves and correcting those patterns. Repeatedly doing so helps your brain learn how to self-regulate your brainwave patterns naturally. And with enough practice, producing optimal brainwaves will become second nature to you.
